For the 2018 HGSS assessment, students in grades 6, 8, and 11 write to a prompt for one portion of the test. Students will write about the following topics: Grade 6, Ancient Greece; Grade 8, Building a Nation; and Grade 11, Civil Rights and Social Change. All student responses must be scored by district staff. Individual districts facilitate the scoring of the written responses. Scoring occurs in KITE® Educator Portal, with two options available for scoring: scoring directly in Educator Portal or printing and then uploading scores in Educator Portal. All scoring must be completed by May 11, 2018. It is recommended that the HGSS assessment be scheduled early in the testing window to allow time for scoring.
Student responses are scored using a holistic rubric (provided below). Educators will use the rubric to help determine the holistic score. Additional scoring and training materials, including specific details regarding how to score, will be provided about two weeks prior to the opening of the testing window. Scoring and training materials will be available in Educator Portal on the HELP tab. Test scoring materials are secure materials and must be maintained as such.
